Case study
Hofstadter’s canonical illustration of the three-layer message. A record launched into deep space with no shared context to assume: the recorded sounds and images are the inner message, the playback diagrams etched on the cover are the outer message, and the artifact’s evident designed-ness is the frame message. The rare case where all three layers had to be shipped together.
