Working note. This one pays a debt three chapters have flagged by name. Chapter 2 introduced Harari’s three realities — objective, subjective, intersubjective — and admitted its treatment of the third was “a sketch rather than a full treatment.” Chapter 5c built the book’s truth machinery and then confessed in its uncertainties that for intersubjective claims it had “leaned on Harari’s three realities to wave at this; I have not done it properly.” Chapter 9 scoped the intersubjective case out of the integration project and called the missing work a “sibling treatment the book has not produced.” This note is that working-through. It does for constitution what 5c did for transmission: says what the pipeline actually does to this kind of truth, names the failure regimes, and works out what capture, correction, and speed mean when the cargo is the kind of thing the carrying makes real.
One commitment up front, because it disciplines everything after it. The book keeps the word truth for intersubjective content, consistently with the terms Harari sets in Nexus. “The dollar has value” is not a half-truth or a metaphor or a useful fiction the book winks at. It is true — you can test it at a bakery. What distinguishes it from “the Earth goes around the Sun” is not how true it is but where the truth is generated: objective truths are generated by reality; intersubjective truths are generated by the network’s agreement. Same word, different generator. The whole note is an unpacking of what that difference does once a pipeline gets involved.
Two truths, one experiment
Start with the plainest version. Take two true sentences: the Earth goes around the Sun and a twenty-dollar bill buys groceries. Now run the cruelest thought experiment available: erase every belief about each from every head on the planet.
The first truth doesn’t notice. The Earth keeps orbiting; the fact sits out there, unharmed, waiting to be re-measured by whoever next builds a telescope. That is what Chapter 2 meant by objective reality having a fact-of-the-matter the pipeline can garble but cannot touch — the fact is the referee, and it outlives any number of bad calls about it.
The second truth dies instantly. The bill is still paper; the ink is still ink; nothing physical changed. But “this buys groceries” stopped being true the moment the agreement that made it true stopped being held. There is nothing out there to re-measure, because the truth was never out there. It was in here — distributed across a few billion minds and the institutions coordinating them — and erasing the minds erased the truth.
That is the entire difference, and it is enough. Both sentences were true. One had a generator the network can’t reach. The other is the network’s reach.
The generator, not the genre
A tempting next move would be to sort the world’s content into bins — science over here (objective), money and nations over there (intersubjective), horoscopes in a third pile. The book is not going to do that, because the bins don’t hold. The carving is per-claim, by generator — not per-artifact, by genre. Most of the artifacts that actually move through the pipeline are mixed bundles.
A nation’s founding story is the clean example. It bundles objective claims (battles that did or did not happen, dates, treaties — some accurate, some not, all checkable against a record the story can’t alter) together with the intersubjective content the story exists to carry: the nation itself, its legitimacy, who counts as us. A myth, in other words, can be based in reality too. What makes the nation intersubjective is not that its story contains falsehoods — it may contain none — but that the nation’s existence is generated by the agreement the story coordinates, while the battle’s existence was generated by the battle.
Run the same blade through astrology and an old puzzle resolves. Chapter 2 filed astrology under manufactured content — claims occupying the pipeline with no measurement origin. But doesn’t astrology count as intersubjective by Harari’s definition? Plenty of people agree on it. The per-claim carving says: split the bundle. Astrology’s personality claims — Mars in retrograde shapes your week — are objective claims about how the world works, generated by nothing, checkable and false: manufactured content, exactly as Chapter 2 filed them. But “I’m a Capricorn” as a membership badge — the shared vocabulary, the community formed around the practice — is agreement-generated and real in precisely the way brands are real. The artifact is a bundle: false objective claims riding on a true intersubjective substrate. The gates can’t tell the layers apart, and most receivers never ask. (This carving is doing load-bearing work and is not yet fully secure; the uncertainties section comes back to it.)
One more distinction, easy to state and easy to lose. Every intersubjective truth casts an objective shadow: that the agreement holds is itself an ordinary objective fact about the network. “Most merchants accept dollars” is objective — a survey can check it; it’s a claim about the agreement, generated by how minds actually are. “The dollar has value” is intersubjective — generated by the agreement itself. The two sentences travel together and are easily mistaken for each other, and the mistake matters: economists, pollsters, and chain explorers measure the shadow all day without ever touching the generator. Reporting on a constitution is transmission. Participating in one is not.
The pipeline is wired into its own cargo
Here is the structural core of the note, the one sentence everything downstream depends on.
For an objective claim, the pipeline sits outside the fact. Chapter 1’s stages can compress the claim, the gates can pass the wrong variant, the receiver can decode with the wrong key — and through all of it the fact sits untouched on the far side of the damage, available for the next replication to appeal to. Transmission and reality are separate systems. That separation is what every corrective in Chapter 2’s case studies was banking on.
For an intersubjective claim, the separation does not exist. The truth is the agreement; the agreement lives in the network’s heads and habits; and the pipeline is the thing that reaches into heads at scale. A receiver decoding “the dollar is sound” is not just reading about the agreement — their decode becomes part of the agreement’s state, one more mind holding (or dropping) the thing whose being-held is the truth in question. The pipeline does not report the agreement; it is one of the places the agreement happens. For intersubjective truth, transmission is participation in constitution.
Said plainly, for the reader who wants it in one breath: with objective facts, the pipeline is a security camera pointed at the world — it can film badly, but it can’t change what happened. With intersubjective truths, the camera is part of the crime scene. Pointing it somewhere makes things happen there.
Two consequences fall out immediately.
First, reach changes the truth itself, not just who knows it. An objective fact known by ten people and by a billion is the same fact with different circulation. A currency held by ten people and by a billion are different monetary facts — the billionth holder didn’t learn about the dollar’s value, they added to it. Chapter 5’s virality machinery is, for this cargo, not a distribution mechanism downstream of the truth. It is upstream. It is part of the generator.
Second, the famous reassurance fails. When the pipeline mangles an objective fact, the fact waits outside, unharmed, for re-measurement — Chapter 2’s consolation. For intersubjective truth there is no outside. Bend the agreement-making process and you have not gotten the truth wrong; you have manufactured a different truth, and there is no residue of the old one left over to check the new one against.
The three regimes, translated
Chapter 5c gave the book its truth-outcomes for transmission: a compressed claim lands as preserved truth (receiver’s key close to the original), inverted truth (keys opposed — true claim, false belief), or orthogonal truth (the claim read as an identity flag, not decoded at all). All three assume a fixed generator the decode can be scored against. Drop that assumption — let the decodes themselves feed the generator — and the regimes translate rather than transfer. The failure axis rotates: for objective content the question was error (how far is the belief from the fact?); for constitutive content the question is spread and substance (do the decodes still compose into one agreement, and is the agreement still doing real work?).
Convergent constitution — preservation’s sibling. The compressed form of the binding claim lands close enough to the same place in enough heads that the decodes compose into one determinate agreement. The truth is settled, in the only sense settled can mean here: the network generates it together. This is most money, most law, most institutional reality, most of the time — and it is worth saying so as plainly as 5c conceded the preservation regime, because a note about failure modes that forgot the success mode would be describing a world where no check ever clears. Most checks clear.
Divergent constitution — inversion’s sibling, with the geometry changed. An intersubjective truth cannot be inverted: there is no external fact for the network to be collectively wrong about. What it can do is split. The decodes scatter, pool by community, and harden into camps each affirming the same words as a different agreement. This is exactly the segmentation loop myths-scale-and-bureaucracy worked out — scale compresses the binding myth, compression widens interpretive latitude, latitude sorts into segments — and this note adds only the reframe that the myth note was too transmission-flavored to state: when the diluting claim is constitutive, segmentation is not a misreading of the network’s truth. It is the truth coming apart. A constitutional crisis is the type specimen: both sides waving the same document, each affirming a different constitution, and no fact of the matter beneath the dispute except the agreement that is visibly failing to be one. A split intersubjective truth is less true in the only currency available — less of the network is generating it together.
Hollow constitution — orthogonality’s sibling, and the strangest of the three. For objective claims, 5c’s orthogonal regime was straightforwardly a failure: the claim stopped being decoded as a claim, and truth stopped being the operating axis. For intersubjective claims the same move is not automatically a failure, because affirmation is the mechanism — a flag is a constitutive device, and “decoded as a badge of us” is partly how nations, currencies, and creeds are supposed to work. The failure mode is one notch further on: symbolic affirmation detaches from the behavioral agreement the truth actually consists in. Everyone still says the words; nobody’s behavior composes into the thing the words name. The early weeks of a hyperinflation are the clean case: every citizen still calls the banknotes money — affirmation rates holding steady — while every citizen’s hands are spending them within hours of being paid, refusing to hold them, which is the behavior the monetary agreement is made of. The words outlive the truth. Law on the books that no court enforces and no citizen obeys is the same regime in legal dress: affirmed by all, constituting nothing. Hollow constitution is the regime reification (below) loves best, because a truth that has quietly stopped being generated still photographs like a working one.
The translation is honest rather than tidy: convergent/divergent really are two settings of one dial (how widely do the decodes spread?), while hollow is a different kind of event (the affirmations detached from the behavior) — the same two-plus-one shape 5c suspects of its own regimes, inherited rather than fixed. The uncertainties section carries it.
Capture, when there is no truth to tune against
The medium note defined manipulation precisely: tuning a gate’s criteria against truth. For constitutive cargo that definition has nothing to push off — there is no generator-independent truth for the tuning to betray. So the definition has to be restated, and the restatement is uglier: capture of the constitutive process is steering the generator — re-weighting whose decodes count in the agreement, toward an interest that is not the network’s.
To see what that means concretely, notice something this note has so far left implicit: the agreement was never one-head-one-vote. Real constitutive processes weight the votes, enormously. A central bank’s decode of “what the dollar is” counts more than any million households’; a supreme court’s decode of “what the law says” is the law for everyone downstream; a standards body’s decode of the protocol is the protocol. That weighting is not a scandal — it is the bureaucracy doing exactly the job the myth note assigned it, re-supplying the dropped key, which in constitutive terms means holding the heavy votes that keep the agreement composed. But it has an unavoidable consequence: every scaled intersubjective truth concentrates its generator into capturable surfaces. The capture taxonomy’s whole apparatus applies, with the stakes raised one ontological level.
Run the taxonomy’s main axis. Surface capture — seizing the visible organs, the issuer, the court, the platform’s trending panel — steers the heavy votes directly. It is serious, and it is also the recoverable kind: visible organs can be audited, contested, replaced, and the network knows where they are. Consumer-key capture — the taxonomy’s harder case — re-tunes the keys receivers decode with, through curriculum, catechism, feed. For objective content the taxonomy already showed this is the slow disaster: re-tuned receivers read even good evidence through the bad key. For intersubjective content it is categorically worse, and Chapter 2 said why in one line this note can now unpack: the trained key is not reading equipment pointed at the reality. The trained key is a share of the reality. A captured curriculum for objective content produces receivers who are wrong about the world; the world, unbothered, waits to correct them. A captured curriculum for intersubjective content produces receivers whose agreement-participation generates the captor’s preferred reality — there is no waiting world, no correction coming, nothing to be wrong against. Chapter 8’s capture asymmetry — training damage outlasts preservation damage — acquires a multiplier here: re-train the readers and you have not distorted the constitution’s reception. You have amended the constitution.
And capture of this kind ships with its own camouflage. Call it by its old name: reification — treating a made thing as a found thing, an agreement wearing the costume of nature. “Money just is valuable.” “The market decided.” “The law is the law.” Each sentence files an intersubjective truth under objective, and the filing error is not innocent: a generator nobody can see is a generator nobody audits. 5c named one migration between realities — an objective claim processed as if intersubjective, decoded for team rather than truth, which is the orthogonality regime and the engine of politicized science. Reification is the same border crossed in the other direction: intersubjective truth processed as if objective. The two migrations do opposite damage. Orthogonality takes a claim that had an answer and makes it unanswerable; reification takes an arrangement that could be renegotiated and makes it look unrenegotiable. One destroys a truth’s usability; the other protects a truth’s capture. History marks the moments the costume slips — a presidential signature ends the dollar’s gold convertibility in 1971, a treaty wills the euro into existence, and for an instant everyone can see that money is a decision — and reification is the long interval between such moments, when it reads as physics. Whoever holds a captured generator has every incentive to keep it reading as physics.
No referee — so the corrective’s job passes to the fork
The deepest structural difference comes last, because everything above feeds it.
Chapter 2’s objective-content machinery runs on correctives: replication, consensus reversal, disavowal — each an appeal to the external referee, each capable (in principle, against the gradient) of dragging the network’s belief back toward the unharmed fact. The book’s diagnosis was that correctives systematically lose at the gates. For intersubjective truth the situation is not that correctives lose. It is that there is no corrective, because there is no referee to appeal to. A constitution cannot be falsified. It can only be renegotiated, abandoned, or forked.
The fork is the move that does, for constitutive content, the job the consensus gate does for objective content — and the comparison is exact enough to be worth slowing down for. When divergent constitution becomes unlivable — the camps’ decodes no longer compose, the heavy votes no longer recognized across the seam — the network resolves the indeterminacy by splitting into two networks, each generating its own truth cleanly again. Christianity’s Reformation is the canonical instance, and it is no accident the book keeps finding it in the printing-press era alongside the Hammer: cheap transport widened the myth’s latitude past what the existing bureaucracy could re-key, and the constitution forked. Secessions are the political form. Dollarization is the monetary one — a population walks out of its currency’s agreement and into a neighbor’s, as several countries did of their own collapsed monies in 2000s Latin America and Africa.
The cleanest laboratory, though, is the newest: public blockchains, which are intersubjective truth with the constitution made machine-readable. In 2016 a dispute arose over what the Ethereum ledger truly said after a catastrophic theft — and the dispute was unresolvable by measurement, because both readings were internally valid; the question was which agreement the network would hold. The network forked: Ethereum and Ethereum Classic, two ledgers, two communities, both right — each truth fully generated by the network that holds it. Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash repeated the shape a year later over the block-size question. A fork does not determine which side was correct. A fork determines how many truths there are now. That is what a consensus gate looks like when there is no fact to converge on — and the fact that engineered constitutions now ship with explicit fork mechanics is, quietly, one of the most honest admissions in the modern institutional landscape: the designers knew there would be no referee, so they built the exit.
This recasts the book’s oldest reassurance one more time. For objective content, the marketplace-of-ideas defense was always too cheerful, but it at least named a hope with a referee in it — the fact is out there, and given time and honest gates, beliefs might find it. For intersubjective content the marketplace is the generator. Whatever wins the gates does not approximate the truth better or worse. It becomes the truth. The gates’ gradient — engagement, identity-resonance, drama, the whole political economy — is not distorting an intersubjective truth in transit. It is choosing which one gets to exist.
Constitutive volatility: the thesis’s second blade
The book’s central historical claim (Chapter 1, the transport note) is that transport cost collapsed, and the collapse exposed selection. That claim was built for objective content. Run it over constitutive content and it says something new.
Intersubjective truths feed on their own coverage — that is what being wired into the generator means. The textbook case has been around for centuries: the bank run. “The bank is failing” propagates; holders act on it; the bank fails. The claim was not a distortion of the truth that then came true by coincidence — under fractional reserve, the deposits’ availability is an agreement not to test it all at once, and propagating the claim dissolved the agreement. Belief-propagation manufactured its own truthmaker. Every panic, every speculative mania, every legitimacy crisis runs some version of this loop. The loop is old.
What is new is the clock rate. When transport was slow and expensive, the agreement state of a large network had inertia: a run spread at the speed of rumor and queue — depositors physically lining up outside Northern Rock in 2007 was nearly the last picture of constitution moving at body speed — and the maintenance institutions, the bureaucracies, were engineered against exactly that time constant: deliberation, committees, announcements timed to morning papers. In March 2023, Silicon Valley Bank lost tens of billions of dollars of deposits in a single day, the run coordinated in group chats and timelines, constitution moving at meme speed against institutions still moving at committee speed. The bank was gone before the slow machinery designed to steady such agreements had finished convening.
The transport collapse did two things, and the book has so far only said one. It exposed the selection gates (the existing thesis, for objective content) — and it removed the inertia that used to be a load-bearing, unpaid-for component of every large intersubjective truth (the new blade, for constitutive content). Shared realities have always been able to fall apart; hyperinflations did not wait for the internet. What changed is the ratio between how fast an agreement can now move and how fast the institutions that steady agreements can respond — and a stabilizer that responds slower than the thing it stabilizes is not a stabilizer. It is a spectator with a title.
Plainly, to come up for air: it is not that shared realities never collapsed before. It is that they used to collapse at the speed of rumor, and now they can collapse at the speed of a retweet — while the institutions that exist to steady them still move at the speed of a committee.
Where I land
The note, said whole: intersubjective truths are truths — kept as truths, in Harari’s terms — whose generator is the network’s agreement rather than reality. Because the pipeline reaches into heads at scale, it is wired into that generator: transmission of intersubjective content is participation in its constitution, so reach changes the truth itself and there is no unharmed fact waiting outside a bad transit. The transmission regimes translate accordingly — convergent, divergent, and hollow constitution replace preserved, inverted, and orthogonal truth, with the failure axis rotated from error to spread-and-substance. Capture, with no external truth to tune against, becomes steering the generator — re-weighting whose decodes count — its worst form the consumer-key version (the trained key is a share of the reality), its camouflage reification (agreement wearing the costume of nature). With no referee there is no corrective: a constitution is renegotiated, abandoned, or forked, and the fork — schism, secession, dollarization, chain split — is the consensus gate’s sibling, determining not who was right but how many truths there are now. And the transport collapse the book is built on cuts twice: it exposed the gates, and it stripped the inertia that used to stabilize every large agreement — constitution now moves at meme speed against institutions built for committee speed.
The sentence the rest of the book should inherit: for objective content the captured pipeline distorts the truth; for intersubjective content the captured pipeline decides it. That is why Chapter 2 was right to call this the scarier failure, and why the prescriptive chapters cannot treat the intersubjective case as a footnote to the objective one.
What this changes for the book
- Chapter 2 can cash its promissory note. The “fuller working-through of its own” the chapter deferred now exists; the chapter’s sketch sections should hand off here rather than apologize. A worked intersubjective case (money is the natural one) would ground the second half the way the four cases ground the first.
- Chapter 5 and Chapter 5b get their missing scope sentence. Ch 5’s scope flag promised to mark where the intersubjective version differs and never did: the answer is that for constitutive cargo, virality is not downstream distribution but upstream generation — reach is part of the truth. 5b’s gates, for this cargo, are not filtering reports about a fact; they are weighting votes in what becomes fact.
- Chapter 5c gets its boundary honestly drawn. The three regimes are officially the objective-content case; the constitutive translations live here. 5c’s own orthogonality regime gains its mirror image: reification, the reverse migration, intersubjective-processed-as-objective.
- myths-scale-and-bureaucracy gets re-read one level up. The dilution loop is the scale-dynamics of intersubjective constitution: the binding myth is a constitutive instrument, dilution is the constitution losing determinacy, segmentation is divergent constitution, and the bureaucracy’s key-re-supply is vote-weighting in the generator. Nothing in the note changes; what it is about sharpens.
- Chapter 8’s capture asymmetry gains a multiplier. For intersubjective content, captured training does not produce misreaders of the reality — it produces participants in a different one. Training-side defense is even more load-bearing than the chapter argued.
- Chapter 9 gets its sibling treatment’s foundation. Integrating networks with different constitutions is not moving truth across a gap — each side’s truth is generated by its own agreement — it is interoperability between generators: treaty, exchange, comity. And the meta-point the chapter is now free to state: every integration institution is itself an intersubjective reality that must be constituted before it can carry anything, which is why the trust-bootstrap problem is the hardest on its list — it is the intersubjective project hiding inside the objective one.
- Chapter 10’s critique formally cuts twice. Transmission failure for objective content; generator capture for intersubjective content. The captured platform does not just distort what the network believes — it shapes which we exists. Reification is the captured generator’s first line of defense, and de-reification (“this is a decision, not a law of nature”) is a political act the chapter’s vocabulary should name.
- Chapter 11’s stakes go up one ontological level. An LLM answering “what does the law say,” “what is money,” “what does the constitution mean” at population scale is doing key-re-supply for intersubjective realities — bureaucracy’s job, industrialized. Corpus or objective capture of such a system is not transmission damage; it is a captured generator with the myth note’s third loop outcome (effective-but-owned) built in at unprecedented scale.
- Chapter 12 is designing intersubjective realities and should say so. Its institutions live or die by constituted legitimacy; survivable polarization is surviving divergent constitution; credible neutrality and cheap, visible exit (the fork kept affordable) are what make capture of the new generators self-defeating rather than quietly stable.
Where I’m still uncertain
- The line is the live one. The generator criterion — truth from agreement vs. truth from reality — carves claims, and carving claims rather than artifacts handles the easy mixed bundles (founding stories, astrology). But the hard cases are not yet secure. Brands make quasi-objective promises (“this product works”) fused to agreement-generated value. Constitutional interpretation mixes a written record (objective shadow) with live agreement (generator) in proportions courts themselves dispute. And the hardest: scientific consensus is socially produced — sociologically it looks like agreement — while the book needs it to be tracking an external generator rather than constituting one. “Consensus tracks; agreement generates” is the distinction the whole note leans on, and a hostile reader will push on it exactly where the sociology of science pushes. I am committing to the distinction and flagging that it has not yet been defended at the depth a critic would demand.
- The regime translation may be forced symmetry. Convergent/divergent are two readings of one quantity (decode spread); hollow is a different kind of event (affirmation detaching from behavior). That is the same two-plus-one structure 5c already suspects of its own regimes — inherited here, not fixed. Worse, hollow may just be divergence’s end state (behavior diverging from words is still divergence, between saying and doing) rather than a third cell. The three-name presentation is provisional.
- Decode-as-vote may overstate the receiver. The vote-weighting observation cuts against the note’s own central image: if a central bank’s decode outweighs a million households’, then for most receivers most of the time, participation is nearly notional. The honest version may be that the marginal decode matters only near criticality — runs, forks, legitimacy crises — and the note’s “transmission is participation” is quantitatively almost-false in calm weather and decisive in storms. Whether that asymmetry strengthens the volatility argument (it concentrates all the action at the worst moments) or undermines the constitution argument needs working out.
- The volatility claim is a ratio claim asserted from cases. “Constitution moves at meme speed; institutions move at committee speed” rests on a handful of vivid instances (SVB against Northern Rock, chain forks against schisms). The systematic version — measuring agreement-state half-lives against institutional response times across eras — is exactly the kind of empirical work the book’s experiments folder exists to spec, and it has not been done. Bank runs predating the internet is the standing objection; the time-constant ratio is the claim, and it is not yet evidence-backed.
- The philosophical literature is unengaged. This note runs on Harari plus the book’s own machinery. There is a deep prior literature on exactly this ground — institutional facts and collective intentionality (Searle), the social construction of reality (Berger and Luckmann), imagined communities (Anderson, on nations and print — uncomfortably close to this note’s printing-press instincts), looping effects (Hacking), reflexivity in markets (Soros), exit and voice (Hirschman). Engaging it will sharpen or correct parts of this note; the current draft should be read as the book’s own working-out, written before that engagement rather than in dialogue with it.
